"Norbit" or "Letters from Iwo Jima"?

In case anyone was worried, that was a joke.

After seeing what I believe was "Big Momma's House 2" in the middle of a very long flight, I've sworn off of any movie featuring a man in drag and a fat suit. "Norbit" is not going to pose any serious temptation, luckily. And I like Tyler Perry's movies quite a bit, so I'm happy I can see his new one without any fear of running into Madea.

I am going to see "Letters from Iwo Jima" later today, but only mildly looking forward to it. I kinda liked "Flags of Our Fathers" until it was ruined by a ridiculously heavy-handed and pedantic finish. I am curious, though, to see if "Letters" is a better movie than "Pan's Labyrinth," "Children of Men" or even "Dreamgirls." I'm gonna try hard to keep an open mind until it's finished.

I'll be posting a review at some point tomorrow, so feel free to check back, and have an entirely nonlame weekend.

Iwo Jima may suffer from another heavy-handed finish, but it is miles ahead of Flags when it comes to film-making. Definitely in the top five of 2006 for me.

I just got back from seeing Norbit. I thought, what a great way to follow up a golden globe Eddie Murphy.

And also, to that other "anonymous" up there, he is entitled to his opinion. And you wont get your point across with cussing so much.

I'm not sure I can put in the top five, Vasta, but it was indeed miles better than "Flags, as you said ... I saw it with a full house of people older than me, and I have to say, maybe I am getting old myself, but it is just so pleasant to sit in a movie theater not surrounded by people glued to their cell phones

And to the rather opinionated person who left the first anonymous opinion, I had to remove it, not because you put me down .. I can certainly take that, but please refrain from using that kind of language

So is Flags that much worse than Iwo Jima? Was there any overlap of characters from Flags in Iwo Jima?

I just saw Letters myself yesterday and I liked it quite a bit (I figured that I probably would as I'm a big of Clint Eastwood's direction). However, having seen each film only once so far, I am not prepared to say (at least not at this point) that I think it was necessarily a "better" movie than Flags (which seems to be the general consensus). It was certainly different from Flags. In a way, the two sort of complement one another. In fact, taken together, I think these movies really make one "great" film whereas indivuidually, I think they're both good in their own ways.

They certainly do work well as a package deal, Damian ... I was throughly impressed with how Eastwood, with a big assist from Iris Yamashita and Paul Haggis, was able to get inside the heads of his main protagonists and examine what it means to fight honor and country in what was at that point clearly already a lost cause

Well, Im not planning on seeing "Letters..." cause I dont do war films, but I am glad you choose NOT to see "Norbit." As a Black woman, I have a lot of problems with that film, and others. Check out my blog for a post on the subject!

I did stop by your site, Lola, and that "diatribe," and I use that word in the nicest way possible, about Norbit was very entertaining reading
